The Experience

Every winter, one of the greatest wildlife migrations on Earth passes right through the waters off Waikīkī. Humpback whales travel thousands of miles from their feeding grounds in Alaska to the warm waters of Hawaiʻi, where they breed, give birth, and raise their calves in the same protected channels where ancient Hawaiian canoes once paddled. The Waikīkī Whale Watch departs from Kewalo Basin Harbor and cruises along Oʻahu's south shore — the same migration corridor where humpbacks are most frequently spotted. The experienced crew actively scans the horizon and maintains radio contact with other boats in the area to maximise your sighting chances. When whales are spotted, the captain manoeuvres to a safe, legal viewing distance while the crew narrates what you're seeing. Humpbacks are famously expressive during Hawaiian season — you're likely to witness breaching, tail slapping, pec fin waves, spy-hopping, and if you're lucky, a mother nursing her calf. Along the way, spinner dolphins and Hawaiian green sea turtles also make regular appearances. The Big Kahuna's spacious open-air viewing deck and elevated sightlines make it an ideal whale watching vessel. The 2-hour window gives the crew enough time to find, follow, and observe whale activity without rushing. Soft drinks are included and BYOB is welcome. Peak season is January through March — this is genuinely one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences Hawaiʻi has to offer.
