The Experience

There's no better place on Earth to learn to surf than Waikīkī — and no better teachers than the Native Hawaiian watermen of Hawaiian Boy Surf School. Founded and operated by a Hawaiian family, this isn't just a surf lesson — it's an introduction to the birthplace of modern surfing, guided by people who grew up in these waters. Your instructor will meet you at Kuhio Beach Hula Mound, right in the heart of Waikīkī, with everything you need already in hand. The lesson begins with a thorough beach briefing: ocean safety, how to read the waves, proper paddling technique, and the fundamentals of standing up — all tailored to your individual skill level. Then you paddle out into the warm, forgiving waves of Waikīkī, where shallow reefs and consistent rollers have been turning first-timers into surfers for over a century. Hawaiian Boy's instructors are certified by the American Red Cross in Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid — so safety is always covered — but what sets them apart is their deep connection to the ocean and their genuine love of sharing Hawaiian surf culture with every guest. They don't just teach you to stand on a board; they share the history, the spirit, and the aloha of surfing the way it was meant to be experienced. Choose from a 1-hour or 2-hour session, and pick the format that fits your group: private one-on-one for the most personalized attention, semi-private for pairs, or group lessons for up to 4 surfers. Kids as young as 3 can join through dedicated keiki (children's) private lessons. Paddleboarding lessons are also available for guests who prefer to stand up on flat water — a great alternative for those looking for a more relaxed ocean experience. No experience necessary. Boards provided. Just show up ready to have fun.
