The Experience
Most Molokini tours arrive on large, slow catamarans packed with dozens of guests. This one does things differently. Blue Water Rafting loads a small group onto a nimble, high-speed inflatable raft at the Kihei Boat Ramp and gets you to Molokini Crater in about 15 minutes — often after the bigger boats have already weighed anchor and headed back. That timing is deliberate: you arrive when the crowds have thinned, the water is at its clearest, and you have the crater largely to yourselves. Molokini is a crescent-shaped volcanic crater that breaches the surface of the Maʻalaea Channel between Maui and Kahoʻolawe. Its unique shape creates a protected inner lagoon with visibility that can exceed 100 feet on calm days — some of the clearest snorkeling water in the entire Hawaiian island chain. The crater walls drop dramatically, creating a range of snorkeling environments from shallow inner reef to deep outer drop-offs, all accessible from the raft. Depending on conditions, your guide may also take you along the reef edge for drift snorkeling, or even to the outer backside of the crater where eagle rays, white-tip reef sharks, and pelagic fish are regularly spotted. The marine life inside Molokini is extraordinary: tropical reef fish, moray eels, octopus, and on lucky days, dolphins or humpback whales in the distance. This is not a luxury cruise — it's an efficient, thrilling, adventure-style experience designed for active travelers who want maximum snorkeling time at Hawaiʻi's premier site without the crowds.
