The Experience
Two of Maui's greatest experiences, back to back — on your own terms. In the early morning hours, you depart for the summit of Haleakalā Volcano, climbing by vehicle to nearly 10,000 feet above the Pacific. As the van ascends through darkness, your guide covers the geology, ecology, and deep cultural significance of this sacred mountain — the legendary "House of the Sun" where the demigod Māui lassoed the sun itself to give his people longer days. At the summit, you step into a world above the clouds. The temperature drops sharply, the air thins, and an eerie silence settles over the vast volcanic crater. Then the horizon begins to shift. The Haleakalā sunrise is consistently ranked among the most spectacular on Earth — the sky erupting through every shade of orange, violet, pink, and gold until the sun breaks the rim and floods the crater in light. After exploring Haleakalā National Park and the summit Visitor Center, the bike ride begins at approximately 6,500 feet elevation, just outside the park entrance. Your KONA® mountain bike with hydraulic disc brakes is fitted and ready. The route descends through the legendary "Fabulous 29" switchbacks on Haleakalā Ranch — sweeping views on every turn — then winds through the lush Upcountry communities of Olinda, Kula, Makawao, and Haʻikū. Because this is entirely self-guided, you stop whenever you want. Pull over for sunrise photos. Grab breakfast in Makawao's cowboy town. Browse a boutique. Take the long way through the ranch lands. There is no convoy to keep up with, no group pace to match — just you and 23 miles of some of the most beautiful terrain in all of Hawaiʻi. One of the biggest advantages riders consistently mention: the freedom. The sunrise is unforgettable. The ride home is everything else.
