The Experience
Think of this as Haleakalā on your own terms. You check in at a civilized 8:00 AM at Bike Maui's Haʻikū location — no predawn alarm, no bleary-eyed van ride in the dark. Your guide briefs you on the route, fits you with a KONA® mountain bike with hydraulic disc brakes, DAKINE® backpack, Helly Hansen® rain gear, and a Bell® helmet, then loads everyone into the vehicle for the ascent. As you climb toward the summit, your guide narrates the geological and cultural story of Haleakalā — a shield volcano that last erupted around 1600, rising more than 10,000 feet above the Pacific, sacred in Hawaiian tradition as the "House of the Sun" where the demigod Māui lassoed the sun to slow its path across the sky. You visit Haleakalā National Park with an informative tour of the crater, cinder cones, and rare native flora including the silversword plant found nowhere else on Earth. Then the real adventure begins. The bike ride starts around 6,500 feet and winds 23 miles through Maui's breathtaking Upcountry — past the famous "Fabulous 29" switchbacks, through the working ranches and eucalyptus forests of Olinda and Haleakalā Ranch, the cowboy town of Makawao, and the lush countryside of Haʻikū. Because this is self-guided, you ride at whatever pace you choose. Stop for a cappuccino in Makawao. Browse the boutiques. Pull over for a photo whenever something catches your eye — without waiting for a tour group. You finish back at Bike Maui's shop, having covered one of the most scenic cycling routes in all of Hawaiʻi at your own pace and on your own schedule.
